What it means to do what you can, when you can (#wycwyc)

Throughout the year, we face all kinds of challenges that get in the way of our best intentions. For me—and maybe for you, too—the holiday season and the winter months pose an even great challenge to do what you can, when you can.

Carla and Roni are the excellent bloggers behind the #wycwyc movement (and they now have a book available!). The purpose of it is to, well, do what you can, when you can: to make the most of what you have, to understand and appreciate your abilities, and to celebrate every step along the way.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the notion of What You Can, When You Can this past month. And with that in mind, I wanted to celebrate some of my own #wycwyc moments with all of you!

what you can, when you can

what you can, when you can!

Over the past month, some of the ways that I have been wycwyc-ing include:

  • Making smart food choices earlier in the day.

I’ve been eating a lot of grains lately (product reviewing!), and due to that and also the sheer amount of goodies that have somehow made their way into our home during the holiday season, I haven’t been following the modified green smoothie cleanse for weeks. My dark leafy green intake has definitely suffered!

So with that in mind, I’ve been focusing on enjoying simple foods earlier in the day, such as apples, grapefruit, and baby carrots. It brings me back to the basics (which is a huge component of the modified cleanse), plus it makes for a super tasty breakfast and snacks, and it helps me to enjoy the indulgences rather than feel guilty about them.

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, it’s tricky to get outside in the winter when you work from home! It’s pretty slippery out there, so I’m playing it a bit safer by using the gym for longer bouts of exercise. I really enjoy doing a few quick sets of strength training at home, but it’s really nice to get out of the house for a longer stretch of exercise.

I’m focusing on walking on an inclined treadmill so that I can read books (like The Secret Life of Pronouns) simultaneously. Walking and reading: two of my favorite things! (Obviously, you don’t want the speed to be too fast, or the incline to be too steep, when you’re walking and reading. We’re all about safety here, people ;)). This is such a nice little get-away from the work day, and it also means avoiding the cold and ice, which I approve of.

  • Standing up at my desk.

I might not be getting much exercise in right now, but I also haven’t been sitting down too much. Lately I’ve taken to standing up at my desk for pretty much the entire day. Studies have shown that standing instead of sitting while you work is significantly better for your health—and I really notice an increase in my productivity when I’m standing as opposed to sitting.

Even if you can just stand for an extra 30 minutes each day (which you could totally break up into three 10-minute stretches if you’re not used to it), it will be beneficial to your health! What you can, when you can, right?

  • Accepting things as they come.

Spilling tea on my computer. Dealing with a leaky hot water tank and needing to replace it (just last week! Terrible timing). Things happen, and we can’t exactly do much about them after they have already happened. The most I could really do—in true #wycwyc fashion—was take a deep breath, be grateful the situation wasn’t worse, figure out a solution to the problem, and take action to deal with it. And that just might be my biggest win of them all.

How are you #wycwyc-ing? What have some of your big wins for this past month been? What are you grateful for? How is this season going for you with regards to food and fitness? Share in the comments section below!

  1. Contemplative Fitness

Pretty much how I live much life to begin with, but fitness is my livelihood. That said, for 2 weeks I have let go of all sense. Between a last minute travel plan, a wonderful but unexpected visit from my daughter, dealing with issues of my brothers mental illness, I pretty much checked out of my own fitness.

Perhaps the most dangerous aspect of knowing how to get into shape is also the most luxurious; that I have the ability to live a lesser state of shape from time to time until I feel enough is enough at which point I earn my way out of it. Now is one of those times.

    This was a good reminder.
