Day Ten of the Raw Food Challenge

Yesterday, on Day Nine of the Raw Food Challenge, I ate:

– 1 glass lemon water, 1 apple, and a few corn chips (I made them in the dehydrator the night before and had to taste them when they were ready the next morning :)).

– 1 banana with cashew butter and 1 glass lemon water with 1/2 scoop calcium/magnesium powder

– Salad with romaine lettuce, avocado, tomato, alfalfa/mustard/clover/radish sprouts, carrot juice pulp, broccoli, and pomegranate/orange dressing. I must admit, I have never been an avocado person (unless it’s in a sushi roll), but I figured it would be a good idea to try it out while I’m eating raw for those healthy fats. And it actually tastes alright in a salad! Victory.

– A few corn chips with guacamole, 1 apple with cinnamon, and 1 date dipped in sunflower seed butter

– Small amount of brownie (1/4 of the mixture of 1/2 cup walnuts, 1/2 cup dates, and 1/8 cup cacao powder in the food processor) and 1 probiotic capsule with a glass of lemon water (with 1/2 scoop calcium/magnesium powder in it)

– 1 glass water and 1 mug peppermint tea

– A few raisins, juice pulp flatbread with hummus, and carrot soup. For the soup, I juiced 1 tomato, 2 carrots, and 1/2 cucumber in the juicer, then blended them in the blender with some onion, raisins, black pepper, some of the carrot pulp, and a little bit of extra water. Then I added corn cut from 1/2 cob, a handful of soaked lentils, 1 chopped celery stalk, and a handful of peas (these were frozen peas that I defrosted by placing in hot water), and put it in a pot on the stove. I heated it at a very low temperature so that I could still touch it without it being too hot but so that it was warm enough to be soup. Thanks to Amanda for this great idea! It was a tasty soup.

– Another 1/4 of the brownie (can you say chocolate craving?) along with about 3/4 of a banana

I make raw soups with hot water sometimes. It works quite well. My favorite raw soup is Kristen Suzanne’s Harvest Soup – she posted the recipe on her blog a while ago and we have it at least once a week.

Hanlie- Ooh I shall have to find that recipe. Or do you have a link for it?

Nazarina- Happy New Year to you too! The soup IS quite tasty 🙂

She-Fit- I’m feeling fine! No weird detox symptoms or anything. I am finding, however, that by about 8pm I’m ready for bed… I get quite tired by the end of the day and sleep for much longer than I normally would.

Ditto Miz, Sagan. Really interested to follow your experiment. Wonder what the “early to bed” is about. Could it be a sign of detox? Not sure. I apologize but if you mentioned it in one of your earlier posts, I missed it — is there any particular reason beyond just starting the new year out with a different eating experiment that drove you to try this? Keep us updated on how you feel!

    Miz- 🙂 That’s what it’s all about!

Marsha- No, I don’t “do” the New Year’s thing… it just happened to be this time of year, totally by coincidence. I really wanted to try raw food, but I definitely wasn’t going to do it during the holidays, so it just made sense to wait until January. I learned about raw food a few months ago so I’ve been doing research ever since and that’s what has gotten me interested in it! I don’t know if the sleepiness is a detox sign; I’ve heard of people getting headaches and stuff but nothing about being tired… hm. Not sure!

You are definitely a braver, more self-disciplined woman than I. Just reading that list of foods made me crave a cheeseburger and slice of chocolate cake. All those cold virtuous vegetables I’m sure are very good for you but I don’t think I’d last half a day on that diet!

I’ll be curious to see what you think by the end, but it sounds like you’re doing great!

Crabby- PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD HAND OVER THE CHEESEBURGER AND CHOCOLATE CAKE! *cough* er, I don’t know where that came from… hehe 🙂 It’s not so bad most of the time, but I’ve had a few intense cravings. I like eating healthy, but I ENJOY it much more if I’m eating both cooked and raw foods.
